Chirped Grating Tunable DFB Laser -- Novel Laser Diode with Broader Continuous Tuning Range

A novel wavelength-tunable semiconductor laser is proposed, when the use is made of a chirped grating. Threshold conditions of this chirped grating tunable (CGT) distributed feedback (DFB) laser with three electrodes have been numerically studied on the basis of coupled-mode equations with transfer-matrix forms. It has been found that the DFB lasers with gratings properly chirped may have enhanced single-mode continuous tunability. A preliminary experimental result has shown a 7.3 nm tuning range in a GaAlAs/GaAs CGT DFB laser.
