The Application of Ontology in Digital Silk Roads Project: Multilingual, Multimedia and Multidisciplinary Aspects

Digital Silk Roads Project is a research project on the digital archives of cultural heritage under the agreement of National Institute of Informatics (Japan) with UNESCO. It aims at the extensive and effective usage of information technology in silk road studies, or broadly, cultural sciences. This project has various activities related to the various aspect of digital archives for cultural heritage, beginning from data collection to data cleaning, system development and knowledge management. This presentation, in particular, focus on the knowledge management part of this project, namely the application of ontology to cultural resources. The uniqueness of cultural resources, from out point of view, is multilingual, multimodal and multidisciplinary aspects, and these points arise a lot of practical problems that need to be solved. We will address some experiences on handling cultural resources and also introduce related software tools under development. We also focus on the sharing of research achievements on the web site (http://dsr.nii.ac.jp/) which is accessible from anyone and anywhere using the Internet.
