The Construction of Typhoon Information Database Using the Satellite Image Analysis of Typhoon Cloud Patterns

Typhoon is a severe meteorological phenomenon that heavily affects many regions in Japan. Hence the accurate analysis and prompt prediction of typhoon is an important problem to solve. However, the analysis of typhoon involves the problem of time-series analysis of typhoon cloud patterns, which problem, the author conjectures, cannot be solved solely using tools derived from meteorology. In this paper, therefore, the author applies artificial intelligence approach -- computer vision, pattern analysis, machine learning and data mining -- to the problem of time-series satellite image analysis for typhoon cloud patterns, and approaches the problem of typhoon analysis from a different point of view from meteorological one. The objective of this paper is to construct the typhoon information database which provides such functionality as support for typhoon analysis, or data mining from the large volume of typhoon image collection.
