IIIF Tsukushi Viewer: Generative AI Chat Functionality for Improving Accessibility to Japanese Pre-modern Text

IIIF Tsukushi Viewer is an application that realizes an AI chat function for books by connecting multimodal infrastructure models such as Large Language Models (LLM) and Vision Language Models (VLM) to the IIIF world. First, we built the Tsukushi Content Service to provide the text of IIIF materials and the Tsukushi Chat Service to provide AI chat functionality for books. Then, we built the IIIF Tsukushi Viewer as a user interface for the AI chat using those services. In addition, the sustainability of the services using LLM was examined, and the greatest impact of LLM was argued to be the realization of access to classical books in modern Japanese.
