Knowledge Discovery from Very Large Scientific Databases: 'Digital Typhoon' Project as a Case Study

In various scientific disciplines such as molecular biology and astronomy, a number of comprehensive and universal large-scale databases have been developed and open to the public. This presentation summarizes our activities, "Digital Typhoon Project" as a good example of such "scientific researches by means of large-scale database infrastructure." Our project is also based on the comprehensive image archive of typhoons, and its goal is to discover practically useful knowledge for typhoon analysis and prediction through the uniform integration of various data mining processes such as data collection, data representation, database management, data browsing, and data visualization. This presentation focuses on the topic of "knowledge discovery from large databases," and with an introduction of some results on stochastic data modeling and data organization, the future of this new kind of scientific research is also addressed.
