Typhoon SHANSHAN was formed in South China Sea. Having multiple typhoons as of February 22 is relatively rare; the last time was 1992, about 20 years ago, and this is the fifth since 1951. If we define the boundary of a typhoon season at February 11, this is the fifth earlist typhoon since 1951.
