Typhoon 200621 (DURIAN) Typhoon Name = (DURIAN) : Favorite fruit of Thai people (Durio zibethinus) [Thailand]

Typhoon DURIAN died in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand, but it left extensive damage to Philippines and Vietnam. People who were killed or missing is about 100 in Vetnam, and 120,000 houses were destroyed. Southern Vietnam does not have so many hits of strong typhoons because it is located at low latitudes, so the scale of damage tends to be larger even if a typhoon is in a weakening stage. In addition, the disasters of mudslides at the slope of Mount Mayon in Philippines was even more devastating, with more than 1200 people being killed or missing, so many countries, international organizations, and NGOs have already started local relief efforts in response to the destruction of the typhoon.

Typhoon DURIAN passed about 100km south of Ho-Chi-Minh in the south of Vietnam, and made landfall at a place in Mekong Delta, and the typhoon will soon enter the Gulf of Thailand. The typhoon weakened significantly, but we are seeing a series of disaster reports from Vietnam, such as 26 people were killed by the typhoon.

Typhoon DURIAN is approaching to the southern part of Vietnam, but the region of clouds are getting smaller and the typhoon is weakening. By the way, the damage of mudslides in Philippines is still increasing, in which 450 people were killed and 599 people are missing.

Typhoon DURIAN gave a significant impact on the slope of Mt. Mayon, and the scale of damage is still increasing. 303 people were killed, and 293 people are missing, and there are numerous reports on the destruction of houses by mudslides and strong winds. According to Wikipedia: Mayon Volcano, the volcano had 50 eruptions in these 400 years, and this year the volcano has been active since this August. The mountain has a beautiful cone shape due to the repetitive eruption of the volcano, but the pile of volcano ash and boulders made the slope of the mountain dangerous places for living. But due to the economic condition, many people do not have other choices than keep living in dangerous areas. If you look at the track of the typhoon on Google Earth, and check the place of Mt. Mayon (13.256667N, 123.685E), it is clear that the typhoon passed the place as near as approximately 15km from Mt. Mayon with the central pressure of 940hPa, so this suggests that the rains and winds at Mt. Mayon was extremely strong. Google Earth illustrates the beautiful shape of Mt. Mayon (and a trail of smoke from the top), but this steep cone shape may contribute to extensive mudslides on the slope this time.

Typhoon DURIAN brought heavy rains, and they caused large-scale disasters in which around 400 people were killed or missing due to mudslides that buried several villages on the slopes of Mount Mayon, an active volcano in the south of Luzon Island, with volcanic ash and rocks that have been piling up from the eruption. The Albay province, in which Mt. Mayon is located, was worst hit by the typhoon, and strong winds collapsed many houses, up-rooted trees, and caused blackout everywhere in the province.

Typhoon DURIAN made landfall at Luzon Island, and traversing central Luzon Island to the west as it weakened a little. The track of the typhoon so far had little tendency toward north, so it is expected that the direct hit at Metropolitan Manila may be avoided as long as the current track of the typhoon will not change in the near future.

Typhoon DURIAN is showing rapid intensification in east of Philippines. The central pressure dropped 60 hPa in just one day, and reached the "very strong" category of the typhoon. Because of unknown reasons, we have successive occurrence of rapid intensification in east Philippines -- three typhoons in a row after Typhoon CIMARON, Typhoon CHEBI. So let us compare three typhoons as follows.
Typhoon 200619 Typhoon 200620 Typhoon 200621
Typhoon 200619 (WNP) : MTS106102903 Typhoon 200620 (WNP) : MTS106111012 Typhoon 200621 (WNP) : MTS106112909
MTS106102903
910hPa / 105kt
(16.2N, 124.1E)
MTS106111012
925hPa / 105kt
(16.2N, 124.2E)
MTS106112909
920hPa / 100kt
(13.2N, 126.8E)
All typhoons share the common feature of having the very small "pin-hole" eye. Typhoon CHEBI has the smallest eye with the smallest core clouds, so it indicates that this typhoon has very strong winds near the center. In comparison, Typhoon DURIAN seems to affect broader regions than Typhoon CHEBI. The outgoing clouds from the core are more than other two typhoons, and it might boost the activity of rainy clouds of the typhoon. Another concern is that Typhoon DURIAN is moving approximately 300km to the south in comparison to other typhoons. This difference makes a big difference that the typhoon will strike forest areas in the northern part of Luzon Island, or crowded areas in Metropolitan Manila.

Typhoon DURIAN was formed in east of Philippines. At this time of year, almost in December, most of the typhoons will continue westward movement to Philippines, as shown in the figure of December in Monthly Typhoon Tracking Charts. In terms of this typhoon, firstly Yap Island will be affected by the typhoon tomorrow. Before making landfall at Philippines, JTWC predicts significant intensification, which needs to be watched.
